Understanding Environmental Issues
Every one of us is sustained by various kinds of natural resources — such as food, materials, and energy that are harvested or otherwise extracted from the environment. Our need for those resources is absolute — we cannot survive without them. Moreover, the same is true of all other species — every organism is a component of an ecosystem that provides the means of subsistence. Collectively, the needs and activities of people comprise a human economy. That economy operates at various scales, ranging from an individual person, to a family, to communities such as towns and cities, nation-states such as Canada , and ultimately the global human enterprise. While an enormous and rapidly growing number of people are supported by the global economy, a lot of environmental damage is also being caused.
Global environmental problems involve one or more of the following:. Rapid Population Growth. Food Production and Equitable Distribution. Global Warming. Depletion of the Atmospheric Ozone.

Chapter 1 ~ Ecosystems and Humans
At first glance, the environment does not seem to be a sociological topic. The natural and physical environment is something that geologists, meteorologists, oceanographers, and other scientists should be studying, not sociologists. Yet we have just discussed how the environment is affected by population growth, and that certainly sounds like a sociological discussion. In fact, the environment is very much a sociological topic for several reasons. First, our worst environmental problems are the result of human activity, and this activity, like many human behaviors, is a proper topic for sociological study. This textbook has discussed many behaviors: racist behavior, sexist behavior, criminal behavior, sexual behavior, and others.

The earth has entered a period of hydrological, climatological, and biological change that differs from previous episodes of global change in the extent to which it is human in origin. To explain or predict the course of the present global environmental changes, one must therefore understand the human sources, consequences, and responses, some of which can alter the course of global change. This book examines what is known about the human dimensions of global environmental change, identifies the major immediate needs for knowledge, and recommends a strategy for building that knowledge over the next years.
