His support of Copernican cosmology, against the Church's strong opposition, his development of a telescope, and his unorthodox opinions as a philosopher of science were the central concerns of his career and the subjects of four of his most important writings.

His life was a continuous struggle to defend science from the influence of religious prejudices. He was catholic, forced by the Inquisition to deny his views, and was condemned to home arrest for the rest of his life. Here is the history of his life, a pendulum between science and religious beliefs. Galileo was born in Pisa from Giulia Ammannati — and Vincenzo Galilei — , a musician, on February 15, the same month and year when Michelangelo Buonarroti died. On November 5, , he was registered in the faculty of Artists at the University of Pisa as a student of Medicine. In Florence in he met the mathematician Ostilio Ricci — and took up Mathematics, leaving Medicine, but never graduated.
Tales of Physicists and Mathematicians pp Cite as. Vincenzio Galilei, a well-known Florentine musician, had reflected for a long time on what field to choose for his oldest son Galileo. The son was undoubtedly talented in music, but the father preferred something more reliable. In , when Galileo turned seventeen, the scales were leaning in the direction of medicine. The place of instruction was chosen to be the University of Pisa, perhaps a bit provincial, but familiar to Vincenzio. He had lived for a long time in Pisa, and Galileo was born there.
There are encouraging signs that the history and philosophy of science are becoming more important in the teaching of science and in the preparation of science teachers. This tendency is supported here by looking at the widespread treatment of Galileo's account of pendulum motion in science texts and classrooms, indicating that it is a less than adequate account of the historical facts, and suggesting that the teaching of this commonplace topic can be considerably enhanced if science teachers have some familiarity with basic research in the history and philosophy of science.
