I made my first pass through it a year ago but deliberately postponed my review; reading SICP completely changed the way I approach programming. Thus, I wanted to get some distance to my reading experience and a chance to judge how much influence SICP would have on my everyday programming. I found that SICP does two things for you: it improves your coding no matter what languages you use at the moment. SICP also serves as a platform for learning new languages and techniques by building a foundation and context for your future learning. The style and philosophy of SICP is quite unique.

I notice lots of you are coming via Hacker News, I also did a blog post about the status of the project I should have probably written that here but you should read it to see where I am with the project. It is a great introduction to computation, Peter Norvig probably said it best :. To use an analogy, if SICP were about automobiles, it would be for the person who wants to know how cars work, how they are built, and how one might design fuel-efficient, safe, reliable vehicles for the 21st century. The people who hate SICP are the ones who just want to know how to drive their car on the highway, just like everyone else. Taking a look at viewing figures for the original authors recordings of a version of the course. The first one is k, the second 55k and the last only 12k.
It is remarkable that the authors and the publisher have made this book freely available at the MIT Press site , licensing it under a Creative Commons license. That is much appreciated. The existence of HTML source has made it possible to convert the book to other formats, some of which are presented here. Most visible changes in this version are properly typeset mathematical expressions and vectorized figures. Below is the power series from exercise 3.
Using Scheme , a dialect of the Lisp programming language, the book explains core computer science concepts. Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs has had a dramatic impact on computer science curricula over the past decade. This long-awaited revision contains changes throughout the text. There are new implementations of most of the major programming systems in the book, including the interpreters and compilers, and the authors have incorporated many small changes that reflect their experience teaching the course at MIT since the first edition was published. A new theme has been introduced that emphasizes the central role played by different approaches to dealing with time in computational models: objects with state, concurrent programming, functional programming and lazy evaluation, and nondeterministic programming. There are new example sections on higher-order procedures in graphics and on applications of stream processing in numerical programming, and many new exercises.
In the dawn of e-book readers and tablets, reading a PDF on screen is officially not silly anymore. Enjoy! A.R, May, Page Dedication. This book is.
It is known as the Wizard Book in hacker culture. The MIT Press published the first edition in , and the second edition in It was formerly used as the textbook for MIT's introductory course in electrical engineering and computer science.
Lectures Video. This course exposes students to techniques of abstraction at several levels: a within a programming language, using higher-order functions, manifest types, data-directed programming, and message-passing; b between programming languages, using functional and rule-based languages as examples. It also relates these techniques to the practical problems of implementation of languages and algorithms on a von Neumann machine.
