Oscillation is the repetitive variation, typically in time , of some measure about a central value often a point of equilibrium or between two or more different states. The term vibration is precisely used to describe mechanical oscillation. Familiar examples of oscillation include a swinging pendulum and alternating current. Oscillations occur not only in mechanical systems but also in dynamic systems in virtually every area of science: for example the beating of the human heart for circulation , business cycles in economics , predator—prey population cycles in ecology , geothermal geysers in geology , vibration of strings in guitar and other string instruments , periodic firing of nerve cells in the brain, and the periodic swelling of Cepheid variable stars in astronomy. The simplest mechanical oscillating system is a weight attached to a linear spring subject to only weight and tension. Such a system may be approximated on an air table or ice surface.

The book consists of twelve chapters that include the explanations of the properties of materials in details with fairness. This volume has to present illustrative examples of both the ideas and the methods. The book is intended as a text book on Properties of Matter, Waves and Oscillations for undergraduate levels and also as a reference book for anyone who is interested in this field of enquiry. A lot of books on this topic are available in the market. Sometimes students are facing serious obstacles in their learning process due to their unavoidable situations and no previous much study of Properties of Matter, Waves and Oscillations. The book is comprehensive enough to cover all the topics that are usually taught to the upper undergraduate students of Physics. But because of the above mentioned features, this book will entertain students and teachers alike who have no previous much study of Properties of Matter, Waves and Oscillations.

Waves and Oscillations: A Prelude to Quantum Mechanics places a unique emphasis on the deep connections between classical waves and oscillations and quantum mechanics. Most scientists and engineers understand these connections, but too often they are not stressed to students. This lively book uses these relationships to give additional motivation, without attempting to teach the quantum mechanics. It offers students an engaging and thorough understanding of how modern aspects of physics are deeply rooted in classical aspects of the field, while providing them with the skill sets necessary to overcome the conceptual and mathematical challenges they will encounter as they move forward in the study of physics. The text incorporates a variety of tools aimed at promoting active learning. Conceptual self-tests and sample and practice problems are included in the text, and an interactive companion website offers educational activities and related links. Comprehensively, the book offers a way for students to build a solid foundation for a rich and rewarding study of quantum mechanics in a subsequent course.

Physics is considered as one of the most difficult subjects in science. Often, physics lectures are flooded with heavy formulae, including calculus. In this course, efforts have been made to help students feel physics in addition to learning. Using minimal algebra without calculus, most of the key concepts in classical mechanics have been explained. Various real physics demonstrations also help students to grasp physics from everyday experience. The course covers the basics of Newtonian mechanics including oscillations and wave phenomena.

Unit: Oscillations and mechanical waves

In physics , mathematics , and related fields, a wave is a propagating dynamic disturbance change from equilibrium of one or more quantities, sometimes as described by a wave equation. In physical waves, at least two field quantities in the wave medium are involved. Waves can be periodic, in which case those quantities oscillate repeatedly about an equilibrium resting value at some frequency. When the entire waveform moves in one direction it is said to be a traveling wave ; by contrast, a pair of superimposed periodic waves traveling in opposite directions makes a standing wave.

Mechanics is a calculus-based introduction to classical mechanics, including topics ranging from measurement to gravitational forces and oscillations. This course is designed to provide students with a working knowledge of these elementary physics principles, as well as their applications, and to enhance their conceptual understanding of physical laws. The introduction of data acquisition and analysis methods will be stressed in a laboratory setting.
