Oscillation is the repetitive variation, typically in time , of some measure about a central value often a point of equilibrium or between two or more different states. The term vibration is precisely used to describe mechanical oscillation. Familiar examples of oscillation include a swinging pendulum and alternating current. Oscillations occur not only in mechanical systems but also in dynamic systems in virtually every area of science: for example the beating of the human heart for circulation , business cycles in economics , predator—prey population cycles in ecology , geothermal geysers in geology , vibration of strings in guitar and other string instruments , periodic firing of nerve cells in the brain, and the periodic swelling of Cepheid variable stars in astronomy. The simplest mechanical oscillating system is a weight attached to a linear spring subject to only weight and tension. Such a system may be approximated on an air table or ice surface.

Physics is considered as one of the most difficult subjects in science. Often, physics lectures are flooded with heavy formulae, including calculus. Various real physics demonstrations also help students to grasp physics from everyday experience. The course covers the basics of Newtonian mechanics including oscillations and wave phenomena.

In physics , mathematics , and related fields, a wave is a propagating dynamic disturbance change from equilibrium of one or more quantities, sometimes as described by a wave equation. In physical waves, at least two field quantities in the wave medium are involved. Waves can be periodic, in which case those quantities oscillate repeatedly about an equilibrium resting value at some frequency. When the entire waveform moves in one direction it is said to be a traveling wave ; by contrast, a pair of superimposed periodic waves traveling in opposite directions makes a standing wave.
Mechanics is a calculus-based introduction to classical mechanics, including topics ranging from measurement to gravitational forces and oscillations. This course is designed to provide students with a working knowledge of these elementary physics principles, as well as their applications, and to enhance their conceptual understanding of physical laws.
