Language is the primary form of communication that humans use. However, language is not something that is taught to children. This is called language acquisition. The child acquires the language without any conscious thought or study. This is despite any formal studying of the language. Language learning, on the other hand, is a structured learning of a language.

Language acquisition is the process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive and comprehend language in other words, gain the ability to be aware of language and to understand it , as well as to produce and use words and sentences to communicate. Language acquisition involves structures, rules and representation. The capacity to use language successfully requires one to acquire a range of tools including phonology , morphology , syntax , semantics , and an extensive vocabulary. Language can be vocalized as in speech, or manual as in sign. Even though human language capacity is finite, one can say and understand an infinite number of sentences, which is based on a syntactic principle called recursion.

Language Acquisition vs. Acquiring and learning are two completely different terms but, more than that, they are processes that use distinct cognitive levels. Even when the topic has been explained time and time again , since it's a common discussion among teachers, the terminology is still misused. They are more often than not treated as synonymous. We will take on the subject from two points of view to clarify the difference between these two. Pretty much everything can be explained linguistically.

Difference between Language Acquisition and Language Learning

Children acquire language through a subconscious process during which they are unaware of grammatical rules. This happens especially when they acquire their first language. In order to acquire a language, they need a source of natural communication, which is usually the mother, the father, or the caregiver. Language learning , on the other hand, is the result of direct instruction in the rules of language.

As you may well have noticed, children acquire their mother tongue through interaction with their parents and the environment that surrounds them. Their need to communicate paves the way for language acquisition to take place. As experts suggest, there is an innate capacity in every human being to acquire language. This suggests that it is through exposure to the language and meaningful communication that a first language is acquired, without the need of systematic studies of any kind.

Some people use the term of language acquisition for all the phases that lead to language fluency, including learning to read and write. Others use the term of language learning even for babies and very young, pre-school children.
