The ability to work on a team and collaborate effectively is a necessary skill to succeed in the field of social work.

A rapidly growing number of social workers are expressing a deep interest in and strong concern for global situations adversely affecting the well-being of millions of people. Such situations include global poverty, widespread conflict and post-conflict reconstruction, and the large population of displaced persons, and vulnerable and marginalized groups within them. Increasingly practitioners from several professions are actively involved in addressing these issues at local, national and international levels. This book aims to encourage and inform such involvement by drawing together the practice wisdom gradually emerging within the broad scope of international social work practice. Utilizing an integrated perspectives approach incorporating global, human rights, ecological and social development perspectives, the text is designed to prepare social workers, human services professionals, development practitioners and others who desire to play significant roles in responding to modern global challenges that are critical to the well-being of people, communities, nations and ultimately of us all.

What human service providers should do to strengthen global visions and interconnections. I believe social work has responses to make, at different levels. One of these, which in the current climate is particularly courageous, is to apply a classical social work systemic analysis to terrorism, refusing simply to pathologise the individual, though of course strongly and unreservedly condemning their violent actions, but seeking to understand those actions in a wider context, just as a social worker would do with any offender.

This sees human rights, and human responsibilities, as embedded within our lived experience, and as enacted in our daily lives. This can provide a way of relating to others through our shared humanity, rather than through professional roles, and can be a major organising principle for an international social work curriculum.

Further to that analysis, there are a number of safeguards against colonialist practice, which apply to all social work, but most particularly to international social work, and these can be built into a curriculum. We need to be valuing process rather than outcomes and objectives, in the interest of that often ignored social work ideal of self-determination. We need to be perhaps more value-based than evidence-based, and we need to be defining knowledge, competencies and skills in such a way that deconstructs the privilege built into both the discourse of professionalism, and the discourse of the west.

Social workers, in my experience, can do this well. It is what I believe is at the basis of all social work, but especially of international social work. International social work encompasses those aspects of the profession that address practice or policy issues that affect more than one country; increasingly the term is linked to social work within the context of globalization. The term has been used since at least , and scholars have devoted considerable attention to defining international social work. International social work is generally understood to encompass global social problems and policy issues, comparative social policy, international professional organizations, social work practice focused on development of human rights, or migration, especially that in international agencies. It is potentially a vast subject area if one considers international social work to include comparative and global perspectives on each area of social work expertise and concern. This bibliography is necessarily limited to sources addressing broad categories of the dimensions of international social work. Included are significant works on the major concepts underpinning international social work, attention to key debates within the field, sources on international social work education and on internationalizing curriculum, and sources on comparative social policy.

Society is transforming at a rapid pace and social workers must do the same to provide the best support to their clients. Social work professionals are introduced to cases centered on violence, substance abuse, isolation, inequality and more. With experienced, proper training and a positive mindset, social workers across the nation have developed strategies for addressing these issues, but many challenges remain. Edwina Uehara, president of the Society for Social Work and Research, believes this scientific approach will lead the way to a better world in social work.
