National lockdown: Stay at Home
Set in the late s and the s, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay continues the story of the feisty and rebellious Lina and her lifelong friend, the brilliant and bookish Elena. Lina, after separating from her husband, is living with her young son in a new neighborhood of Naples and working at a local factory. Elena has left Naples, earned a degree from an elite college, and published a novel, all of which has opened the doors to a world of learned and fascinating interlocutors.
The era, with its dramatic changes in sexual politics and social costumes, with its seemingly limitless number of new possibilities, is rendered with breathtaking vigor. This third Neapolitan Novel is not only a moving story of friendship but also a searing portrait of a rapidly changing world.
She has gained admirers among authors, artists, and critics. But her most resounding success has undoubtedly been with readers, who have discovered in Ferrante a writer who speaks with great power and beauty of the mysteries of belonging, human relationships, love, family, and friendship.

Ferrante's singularity is to make a glory of introspection and turn it into theatre.
There's a dark ardour present in her writing, and a thrilling physicality to her metaphors, boldly translated by Ann Goldstein. She speaks of the anxious pleasure of violence , of desire feeling like a drop of rain in a spiderweb. Her charting of the rivalries and sheer inscrutability of female friendship is raw. This is high-stakes, subversive literature.
But these books are more than autobiography by other means. They also look outward, offering a dissection of Italian society that is almost Tolstoyan in its sweep and ambition. They are, into the bargain, extraordinarily gripping entertainment; the plot in this latest installment twists and turns, like a Naples alleyway, towards a sequel-enabling conclusion. Novel by novel, Ferrante's series is building into one of the great achievements of modern literature.
Nothing is superfluous The hashtag is entirely apt. I have caught ferrantefever. Lina's golden talent could wear thin as a device in the hands of a less skilled writer, but the story that follows over the decades from the friends childhood is too well realised and too well populated with memorable characters for this to be a problem.
And, as her celebrity grows, so too does the guessing game surrounding her identity. The third installment of her Neapolitan novels, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay , continued her raw exploration of female friendship and ambition, emotional violence and the enduring scars of the second world war on Italian society, and Ferrante continues to guard her anonymity.

Kindle is more environmentally friendly though. After book three it would be difficult not to look forward to book four. Elena bathes in the success of her published novel, but struggles to write more after the birth of her two daughters, and with her husband's dependence on her central domestic role.
Elena loves Pietro, but the differences between them become increasingly apparent. In the meanwhile, she comes to Lila's aid at the request of old neighbourhood friends Enzo and Pasquale. Lila collapses with exhaustion after her struggles with harrasment and unremitting hard work at the sausage factory. Elena looks after Lila's son Gennaro for a while, and she also intervenes on her behalf by using her new contacts within her husband's more socially influential family.
Political struggle between Fascist and Communist elements becomes increasingly prominent in this story, as does the role of women during these changing times of the late 60's and 70's.
When Elena revisits the old neighbourhood, there are some changes and new riches, but the stifling influence continues to feel like an entrapment. Lila's fortunes change, and Elena becomes increasingly consumed by passion, both have a sense of risk and danger about them. The tension between hostility and tenderness between the friends is quite unique to this series of novels. I've never read books so quickly with such This is love.
I've never read books so quickly with such intensity. I'm on my 4th book and I'm dreading to reach the last page knowing that it's the last second they'd be part of my life. Story is about the two dazzling girls and how they each shape each others lives and really exquisitely told. I share a close friendship with two girls myself for over two decades and they are each so very magical.
Not many people can enter our worlds but these girls in the books and Elena Ferrante really have. Best story telling. I love this series of books. The eloquence with which Elena Ferrente writes about the human psychology is thrilling to read. I love Lila and Elena entwined lives. This third book I found a bit gloomier in its political era. I preferred the first and second books.
However the author writes this story soo well. This is the third installment in this gripping story of friends Elena and Lila set in Italy. I was immersed in their lives and can't wait to read the 4th and final book in the series.
