Demand for Goods and Services

When two lines on a diagram cross, this intersection usually means something. At any other price, the quantity demanded does not equal the quantity supplied, so the market is not in equilibrium at that price. We can also identify the equilibrium with a little algebra if we have equations for the supply and demand curves. Right now, we are only going to focus on the math. Remember, these are simple equations for lines. We now have a system of three equations and three unknowns Qd, Qs, and P , which we can solve with algebra. Step 1 : Isolate the variable by adding 2P to both sides of the equation, and subtracting 2 from both sides.

Introduction to Supply and Demand

Economists use the term demand to refer to the amount of some good or service consumers are willing and able to purchase at each price. Demand is also based on ability to pay. If you cannot pay for it, you have no effective demand. What a buyer pays for a unit of the specific good or service is called price. The total number of units purchased at that price is called the quantity demanded. A rise in price of a good or service almost always decreases the quantity demanded of that good or service. Conversely, a fall in price will increase the quantity demanded.

In this section we combine the demand and supply curves we have just studied into a new model. The model of demand and supply uses demand and supply curves to explain the determination of price and quantity in a market. The logic of the model of demand and supply is simple. The demand curve shows the quantities of a particular good or service that buyers will be willing and able to purchase at each price during a specified period. The supply curve shows the quantities that sellers will offer for sale at each price during that same period. By putting the two curves together, we should be able to find a price at which the quantity buyers are willing and able to purchase equals the quantity sellers will offer for sale.

Supply and demand

In microeconomics , supply and demand is an economic model of price determination in a market. It postulates that, holding all else equal , in a competitive market , the unit price for a particular good , or other traded item such as labor or liquid financial assets, will vary until it settles at a point where the quantity demanded at the current price will equal the quantity supplied at the current price , resulting in an economic equilibrium for price and quantity transacted. It forms the theoretical basis of modern economics. Although it is normal to regard the quantity demanded and the quantity supplied as functions of the price of the goods, the standard graphical representation, usually attributed to Alfred Marshall , has price on the vertical axis and quantity on the horizontal axis.
