Star topology is a network configuration that uses the shape suggested by its name. The ease of installation makes it one of the most common setups that get used today.

In Start Topology, all the computers are connected to the central located device called as hub. All the devices on the network are connected with a hub device through a communication link. Each computer requires a single wire for the connection to the hub. In star Topology, there exists a point-to-point connection between a node and hub device.

15 Advantages and Disadvantages of Star Topology

A network topology refers to the way in which nodes in a network are connected to one another. The network structure defines how they communicate. Each kind of arrangement of the network nodes has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here we tell you about the same. Network topologies describe the ways in which the elements of a network are connected.

Network topology is the description of the arrangement of nodes e. No matter how identical two organizations are, no two networks are exactly alike. However, many organizations are relying on well-established network topology models. Network topologies outline how devices are connected together and how data is transmitted from one node to another. A logical network topology is a conceptual representation of how devices operate at particular layers of abstraction. A physical topology details how devices are physically connected.

What is Star Topology, Advantages and Disadvantages of Star Topology

In this network structure, signal and data are transmitted through the central unit or hub, as it usually is called, which acts as a server to all the other devices which can be seen as clients. To know more about the Star Topology Advantages and Disadvantages, keep reading this article till the end. The central Hub needs to be a faster and self-contained computer than can control the other nodes and rout the traffic towards them since the whole strength of the network depends on the capability of the hub. An alternative name of this network is Star Network but this name can easily be confused with The Star Network which is a worldwide popular television broadcasting network. To control the devices connected to it and to transmit data to them, the hub has a Content Addressable Memory CAM table. Inside this table are stored all the addresses of all the clients connected to the hub. The need for a CAM Table is necessary since the hub has no memory of its own.

What is Star topology? 1) As compared to Bus topology it gives far much better performance, signals don't necessarily get transmitted to all the workstations. 2) Easy to connect new nodes or devices. 3) Centralized management. 4) Failure of one node or link doesn't affect the rest of network.

Network Topologies

Network topologies describe the methods in which all the elements of a network are mapped. The topology term refers to both the physical and logical layout of a network. In this network topology tutorial, we will explain: What is Topology?

The way in which devices are interconnected to form a network is called network topology. So cable lengths, distance between nodes, location of servers, etc. Failure of one node or a segment of cabling should not render the whole network useless.

1) Too much dependency on central device has its own drawbacks. 2) The use of hub, a router or a switch as central device increases the overall cost of the network. 3) Performance and as well number of nodes which can be added in such topology is depended on capacity of central device.

Advantages of Star Topology: · Easy to manage and maintain the network because each node require separate cable. · Easy to locate problems.
